How to Load a Washing Machine

LAUNDRY TIPS

Many tools have been invented over the years that have made our lives incredibly convenient, and laundry machines are one of them. Rather than having to spend a lot of time and elbow grease scrubbing our garments on a washing board, we now have the convenience of loading our washers and letting the machines do the hard work.

How well the machine handles your laundry has a lot to do with how well you load the machine. Are you loading your washing machine correctly? Instead of stuffing your items into your washing machine, there are more strategic ways to fill it to ensure that your garments come out sparkling clean.

Load in the Proper Order

Every type of washing machine has a different way of loading laundry. Check under the lid of your washing machine to see exactly how you should be loading the machine. If your washing machine is a standard model, the best way to load your machine is to add the detergent, then your items, then start the machine to let the water run. It's never recommended to pour the detergent directly over top of your laundry because the fabrics could get damaged.

If you have a more modern model, the detergent and fabric softener will typically have their own separate compartments, which are completely separate from the actual chamber where the clothing is placed. These dispensers are designed to release the detergent and fabric softener at the right time throughout the laundry cycle.

Don't Overload

You may be tempted to cram as many garments into your washing machine as possible to save time, but avoid this temptation. For starters, the items won't come out as clean as they should, as they will have much less room to be tossed and soaped. Further, the machine will have to work harder than necessary, which can shorten its lifespan.

As a general rule, don't fill the machine more than three-quarters full. For front loaders, don't fill the machine past the last row of holes nearest to the door, and for top loaders, don't fill the machine any higher than the agitator.

Add Garments Loosely

Don't stuff your garments into the washing machine too tightly. Instead, your items should be added loosely into the machine and be distributed evenly. Once you reach the threshold as discussed above, don't add any other garments. Instead, save them for another load.
