Eco-Friendly Cleaning Tips for the Laundry Room

LAUNDRY TIPS

You need to do laundry, but you're also a responsible person who cares about the environment. All the energy that washers and dryers utilize as well as the chemical-laden detergents often used can really wreak havoc on the environment.

Luckily, there are plenty of easy ways to make your laundry room "green" and keep the planet happy while getting your clothes clean and leaving more money in your pocket. Here are some tips to do just that.

Wash in Cold Water

Imagine all the energy needed to heat up all the water needed to do a load of laundry. In fact, most of the energy that a washing machine uses comes from heating up the water, so think about how much energy - and money - you could save by washing in cold water! While there's an unwritten rule that whites should be washed in hot water for best results, your light-colored garments will still come out clean even if the temperature of the water is a bit lower.

Save Laundry Day For Full Loads

You can save even more energy and money by waiting to do your laundry until you've got a full load. If you wash more frequently with smaller loads, you'll just be using all that water that could be used for more items. Instead, wait until you've got enough soiled garments in your hamper for a full load. Otherwise, consider reducing the water levels to accommodate a smaller load size.

Clear Out the Lint Filter

Not only is an overloaded lint trap a fire hazard, but it can also force your dryer to work harder than it should to dry your clothes. Make sure you clean out the trap after every load to keep that from happening.

Hang Your Clothes Out to Dry

This might sound like a drag, but hanging your clothes out to dry can save a lot of wasted energy that your dryer tends to suck up. Plus, you'd be amazed how much money you can actually save doing this with every load. At the very least, consider taking your clothes out when they're half-dry to keep wrinkles at bay, then hang them out.

Use Eco-Friendly Cleaning Detergents

One of the best ways to go green in the laundry room is to use a laundry detergent that's free and clear of harsh chemicals. Certain chemicals that are found in conventional laundry detergents are harmful to the environment when they're washed down into the sewer and can also cause skin irritation and upper respiratory issues. Instead, use natural, eco-friendly detergents to keep you and the earth safe!
